The Art of Brickwork

Brick: Daniel Robertson's 50mm Hawthorn Black
When Glenn Murcutt visited Daniel Robertson's display he was armed with a photo. The photo provided the conceptual base for the brickwork in the new Swinburne University building.
The photo was of an old brick wall built hundreds of years ago in Sweden. The bricks were full of character and charm surrounded by a generous 35mm mortar joint. Murcutt found the wider mortar joint and theproportion of the Swedish brick most appealing. The effect of the wider joint framed the brick and accentuated its rugged character. When he saw Daniel Robertson's Roman brick, only 50mm high, he likened the proportions to those in his photograph. Robertson's bricks were rustic
too - varying in colour and texture like the old Swedish wall. |
