| CASE STUDY 6
Daniel Robertson congratulates John Wardle Architects for winning the Victorian Architecture Medal 2008 for the Nigel Peck Centre for Learning and Leadership, Melbourne Grammar School.
John Wardle Architects were commissioned to design the Nigel Peck Centre for Learning and Leadership at Melbourne Grammar School.
Their huge challenge was to address the school’s heritage of nearly 150 years and the adjoining bluestone campus, breakdown the barrier between the school and the outside world and create a state of the art hub enhancing the school’s public face and perception while facing the Domain and Shrine of Remembrance.
With their solution JWA sought a brick that would have the bluestone tones to tie with the original buildings while allowing a sculptural end form.
Using the Roman London Blend as a base Daniel Robertson experimented with various techniques to improve the strength and coverage of the blueing of the bricks. Many trials and sample walls were constructed. After agreement on the colour there were 11 special shapes to design to allow for the brick to flow as a fabric stretched around the building frame and allow the creation of the “book bond” brick facade. The result is outstanding. |
